It is A-Game’s 3rd Anniversary!

October 4, 2017

Thank you for being part of our three-year anniversary! Because of you, you the people that are reading this blog, my clients, and those that inspire me every day, we have reached A-Game’s third anniversary. There are so many people that have helped with this adventure but for those that came in at the very beginning, thank you cannot be said enough. These past three years have been challenging. Challenging from an aspect that I never went into sport psychology with the intention of starting my own business. Truthfully, I got into sport psychology and thought, “Hey, after I graduate I’ll just find a job, it should be easy.” Hind sight is always 20-20 but sometimes you need to be knocked down to have the opportunity to build yourself back up.

Sport psychology and mental training is an extremely niche field. Sport psychology is also a fairly new career field. The first sport psychology research paper was published in 1898 by Norman Triplett. Sport psychology was finally accepted as an academic discipline in 1925 when Coleman Griffith opened his Athletic Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois. In comparison, psychology as a whole can trace its origins back to 4 BC to the Ancient philosophers.  Wilhelm Wundt, however, is credited as being the father of modern psychology when he opened the Institute for Experimental Psychology at the University of Leipzig in Germany in 1879. Being a fairly new field, sport psychology is not in the public’s everyday nomenclature.

This was the challenge I was up against three years ago. In 2014, there were really only a couple of established career tracks you could take if you wanted to be in the field of sport psychology. One track was the academic researcher track. While academics are definitely needed to further the discipline, this was not a track I wanted to follow. The other track was working with the military on performance enhancement. I love the work several of my colleagues are doing, but personally I felt ill-equipped to work within this population. There are several sport psychology consultants working with athletes and within teams, but these careers are few and far in-between. I made a decision back in 2014. At the core of that decision I thought, if someone is not going to give you an opportunity, you have to create an opportunity for yourself.

This opportunity to build my own business from the ground up has opened so many doors and has been such a rewarding experience. It has allowed me to build connections with athletes and coaches while helping them achieve their personal goals. The foundation of A-Game has always and will always be helping others. In the process of starting this business, it has also been able to help me find my place within this crazy field of sport psychology. If you are thinking about starting something, whether it be a business, signing up for that marathon, or just deciding to go after what you have always wanted, I say, DO IT! The adventure is worth it. There will be ups and downs, some nicks and bruises, but the feeling that you went after it is something no one can take away from you. As I reflect on these past three years, that is what I take with me. Starting this business has instilled a courage and a confidence that I never knew I had, and I hope I can inspire you to do that for yourself. Thank you again for taking time to connect and be part of this community. Remember because of you, you have helped me build my dreams and I want to help you do the same!
